Writing boilerplate, generating tests, converting designs to code: agents already handle these. But the role of “software developer” was never just those tasks.
What is actually happening: the ratio of production work to judgement work is shifting. A developer who spent 70% of their time writing code and 30% making decisions about what code to write will increasingly spend 30% writing code (with agents) and 70% making decisions, reviewing agent output, and solving the problems agents cannot. The role is not disappearing. It is changing shape.

That said, if you are choosing: learn the language that is used in the domain you want to work in. Python for data and ML. TypeScript for web applications. Go or Rust for infrastructure. The language is a means of entry to a domain, and the domain is what matters.
What matters more than any language: understanding systems. How do databases work under the hood? What actually happens when an HTTP request travels from browser to server? Why does this distributed system fail under load in this specific way? Only if you want to manage. Moving into management as an escape from automation is a bad reason and will make you a bad manager.
Management is not immune to agents either. The administrative tasks of management (status reporting, meeting scheduling, performance review drafting, project tracking) are being absorbed by agents like everything else. What remains is the human core: giving difficult feedback, building team culture, resolving conflicts, making hiring decisions, and shielding your team from organisational dysfunction.
If those tasks appeal to you, management is a strong path. The need for good engineering managers is not decreasing. If those tasks sound miserable and you are considering management because “at least they will not automate managers,” stay technical and focus on the judgement-heavy tasks in your current discipline.
Nobody knows, and anyone who gives you a specific date is guessing. But the pattern is observable: tasks that are well-defined, measurable, and have clear right/wrong answers are what agents absorb first. Tasks that are ambiguous, context-dependent, and require human trust are what they reach last.
A more useful frame than “how long do I have”: look at the task analysis from the guide. If your “already automated” column is growing quarter by quarter, the change is happening now and the question is how you respond. If your work is mostly in the “years away” column, you have time to prepare deliberately rather than reactively.
The pace of change is not uniform across industries, companies, or even teams within the same company. A developer at a startup that aggressively adopts AI agents will feel the shift years before a developer at a regulated enterprise that moves slowly. Your specific context matters more than industry-wide predictions.
A computer science degree teaches you how computers work, how to reason about algorithms and data structures, and how to think systematically about complex problems. These are not the skills being automated. If anything, they become more valuable as AI handles the surface-level implementation and the deeper understanding becomes the differentiator.
The risk is not the degree. It is the expectation that comes with it. If you expect a CS degree to guarantee a specific type of job (writing CRUD applications at a large company), that expectation may not hold. The alternative (self-teaching or bootcamps) is viable for production skills but weaker for the foundational understanding that underpins long-term career resilience. Neither path is wrong. Both require supplementing with the human skills (communication, stakeholder management, judgement under ambiguity) that no curriculum teaches well.
Specialise in a domain. Generalise across skills.
This sounds contradictory but it is the core of the skill stacking framework. Deep knowledge of a specific domain (healthcare, fintech, logistics, education) makes you irreplaceable in ways that pure technical skill does not, because domain knowledge includes context, relationships, and institutional understanding that AI cannot easily acquire.
At the same time, being a specialist who can only do one thing is fragile. The developer who deeply understands healthcare and can communicate with clinicians and can evaluate AI tools for clinical use: that combination is more durable than any single specialisation.
The worst position: a generalist with no domain depth. You can do a bit of everything, but there is nothing you understand well enough to exercise judgement about. AI is a better generalist than any human. Do not compete with it on breadth.
Freelancing is more exposed to agent displacement than employment, and less exposed, depending on what you freelance.
More exposed: if you freelance on production tasks (build me a website, design me a logo, write me a script), you are competing directly with AI agents that can do these tasks faster and cheaper. The race to the bottom on production freelancing is already happening. Rates for straightforward development and design work are falling.
Less exposed: if you freelance on judgement and trust (advise me on my architecture, audit my codebase, help me figure out why our users are churning), you are selling exactly the thing agents are worst at. Clients pay a premium for human expertise applied to their specific context. This type of freelancing may actually benefit from the agent boom, because agents make you faster at the analysis while the client still needs you for the interpretation and recommendation.
The shift for freelancers is the same as for employees: move from selling production to selling judgement.

You have something that junior workers and AI agents do not: accumulated context. You understand why your company’s systems work the way they do. You know which stakeholders need to be convinced for a project to succeed. You have seen three migrations fail and know the warning signs. You have relationships across the organisation that a new hire would take years to build.
This accumulated context is the moat. Agents have no institutional memory. It does not know that the last time your team tried microservices it went badly because the DevOps team was understaffed. It does not know that the VP of Engineering will block any proposal that does not include a rollback plan. You do.
The adaptation is not “learn a new stack.” It is: identify the accumulated judgement and context you carry, make it visible and valuable, and stop spending your time on the production tasks that agents are reaching for. Let the agents handle what they handle well. Apply your experience to the decisions they cannot make.
You can. Many people will. The shift is gradual enough that ignoring it is comfortable for a long time, until it is not.
The risk of ignoring it is not sudden unemployment. It is slow irrelevance. Your skills gradually become less valued. Your salary stagnates while colleagues who adapted command premiums. The tasks that defined your expertise become automated, and you find yourself doing less important work without quite noticing when it happened.
