Show that you evaluate trends against your users' actual needs and mental models, not just visual appeal or industry pressure.
Strong answers show critical evaluation: trends are observed but filtered through usability principles and user needs. Best candidates can name trends they deliberately did not follow and explain why. They should mention the importance of established patterns (Nielsen heuristics, platform conventions) over novelty.
Tests design maturity. Junior designers chase trends. Senior designers know when familiar patterns serve users better than novel interfaces.
